An Update from Dr. Smith, October 1, 2026

An Update from Dr. Smith, October 1, 2026

Dear Fort Bend ISD Community,

Following our recent Board of Trustees meeting, I want to share a few key updates about decisions and discussions that are important to our students, staff, and families.

FBISD’s Newly Adopted Tax Rate Remains Among the Lowest in the Region

FBISD’s Board of Trustees approved a tax rate of $0.9969 per $100 of property value, which is 6 cents lower than last year’s rate.

The rate includes:

  • $0.7169 for district operations, such as day-to-day expenses
  • $0.2800 to repay voter-approved bond debt

The decrease reflects the expiration of seven temporary “disaster pennies” which were added to the 2025 M&O tax rate following Hurricane Beryl.

The tax rate will support district operations and bond payments for the 2026-27 school year.

Update to 2026-27 Instructional Calendar

The last day of school for our students has moved to Wednesday, May 26, 2027. May 27-28 will be teacher workdays. Adjustments will also be made to the final exam schedule for seniors.

These changes allow the district to hold graduation ceremonies on four consecutive days before Memorial Day and does not affect required instructional minutes.

Graduation dates and times will be announced later this fall.

View the updated calendar.

Secondary Attendance Boundary Scenarios

District leaders and members of the School Boundary Advisory Committee presented an update on the secondary attendance boundary planning process, including results and feedback from our recent community survey. As a reminder, the focus of this planning has been to relieve overcrowding at Austin, Elkins and Travis high schools and align feeder patterns to keep our students together as much as possible.

The Board will vote on the changes to the district’s secondary boundaries at the October 5 Agenda Review Meeting.
