An Update from Dr. Smith, May 14, 2026

An Update from Dr. Smith, May 14, 2026

Dear Fort Bend ISD Community,

As we close out this school year and prepare for the next, Fort Bend ISD continues moving forward with intention—focused on expanding opportunities and creating a strong future for every student.

We remain grounded in what matters most: supporting students, strengthening our schools, and preparing for the future of public education. As education continues to evolve across Texas, we are committed to being ready.

Annual Student Enrollment Report

At Monday night’s Board meeting, our outside demographer presented the district’s annual demographic study report. The report confirmed what we already knew to be true. Fort Bend ISD, like many school districts across Texas, is facing declining student enrollment.

The study reviews current student locations, the impact of alternative educational opportunities available to families, housing and economic trends, patterns of student movement, and enrollment projections. This data helps us understand how our community is evolving and will guide our decisions as we plan for the future of Fort Bend ISD.

Long-Range Boundary Planning for Secondary Schools

During this next phase of the Long-Range Boundary Planning process, we will focus on secondary schools. Throughout this process we will continue to engage with our School Boundary Advisory Committee (SBAC) to gather input to help inform planning and evaluate potential options.

The secondary boundary planning process will look different from our elementary work. Currently, secondary school closures are not being considered. We will explore additional factors, including expanding secondary programs and specialized learning opportunities, as well as the impact of newly approved transfer policies that expand options for both current students and students outside the district.

We understand these conversations are important to our families and community. We remain committed to engaging stakeholders throughout this process as future planning decisions are made.

You can view the May 11, 2026 Board Meeting, and the Budget Workshop that took place prior to Monday night’s meeting, on the Board of Trustees website.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marc Smith
Fort Bend ISD Superintendent
