From FBISD Bus Rider to Future Law Student

Fort Bend ISD (July 1, 2026) - Long before Trey Gaw helped route buses for Fort Bend ISD, he was one of the students riding them. 

Trey graduated from Elkins High School in May 2023 and has connected to FBISD since kindergarten. After years as a student, his story with the district came full circle when he connected with FBISD Transportation at a CTE job fair and was given the opportunity to serve as a Routing Intern. 

What started as an internship soon became something more. 

Trey later worked as a part-time Routing Clerk in FBISD Transportation, helping support the same system that once helped get him to and from school. He credits his former supervisors Traci Love and Executive Director Mike Jones for recognizing his potential early on and inviting him to return to the district after graduation. 

“I never thought I’d go from being a bus rider to routing buses,” Trey said. “Thank you FBISD for all of the amazing opportunities. And a special shout-out to my transportation family for inspiring me every single day.” 

For Trey, working in Transportation gave him a behind-the-scenes look at the people and planning it takes to serve students each day. Because of staffing shortages, the role was hands-on, giving him the chance to learn quickly, take on real responsibilities and see how his work made a difference. 

“It’s amazing to look back and reflect on everything I got to be a part of in my few short years with FBISD,” Trey said. “I learned a lot both from real-world experience and being surrounded by such dedicated professionals who acted as mentors.” 

But for Trey, one of the best parts was serving the same district that shaped him. 

“I’m simply giving back to the district that has given me so much,” he said. 

This past May, Trey graduated from the University of Houston with a 4.0 GPA and summa cum laude honors. This fall, he will continue his education in law school. 

While he jokes that he is still not sure what routing school buses has to do with becoming a lawyer, Trey said his time with FBISD gave him something that will stay with him. 

“Working for FBISD has provided me an insider’s perspective on public service and the value of serving others,” he said. “To think I played a small part in a far greater mission, which is the success of students, is definitely something I aspire to do more of in the future.”
