Fort Bend ISD Police Department History & Community Connection

 

The Fort Bend ISD Police Department was established in 1990 with four officers serving a district that consisted of 18 elementary schools, seven middle schools, and three high schools, with a population of approximately 36,000 students and 3,600 staff members.

Since then, Fort Bend County and the district have grown considerably, as has the police department. Today, FBISD Police has 75 officers who serve 51 elementary schools, 15 middle schools, 11 high schools, and five specialty schools. The district now serves more than 78,000 students and 12,000 staff members.

Part of what makes FBISD unique is the continuity that has been maintained throughout the district since the department's inception. In more than three decades, there have been only three police chiefs. Establishing both short- and long-term vision for the department has proved critical, allowing each chief to build upon the foundation of those who came before them while pioneering new safety and security, community outreach, and education initiatives.

Our current FBISD Chief of Police, Anthony Sanders, understands the important role the department plays in school safety, educating our students, and building positive relationships among youth, the community, and law enforcement.

For law enforcement officers in Fort Bend ISD, building relationships on school campuses is a daily process. The department is proud to say that more than two dozen of its officers and civilian employees are FBISD alumni. These homegrown members of the department intimately understand what students are experiencing, which is invaluable. Their shared experiences create trust and empathy and ultimately strengthen the connection between students and officers.

As these relationships grow, officers develop a vested interest in the success of their students and become some of their biggest supporters—not only throughout their education, but beyond.

The mission of the Fort Bend ISD Police Department is to provide a safe environment in and around our schools and district facilities while serving as educators and building positive relationships with our students, staff and families.
