Work-based Learning

Career Preparation

Career Preparation provides opportunities for students to participate in a learning experience that combines classroom instruction with paid business and industry employment experiences and supports strong partnerships among school, business, and community stakeholders. Career Prep experiences occur in a paid or unpaid arrangement and a variety of instructional settings. 

Practicum 

Practicum courses are designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills. Practicum experiences occur in a pair or unpaid arrangement in a variety of instructional settings. 

Internships

Internships are a method of instruction for individuals that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills. It offers the employer the opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into the workplace, develop talent, and potentially build a pipeline for future full-time employees. 

 

Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) - are extracurricular groups for students in CTE pathways to further their knowledge and skills by participating in activities, events, and competitions. 

DECA: is a CTSO that helps students develop college and career readiness skills. Specifically, DECA is focused on preparing students for careers in Business, Marketing, & Finance. 

FCCLA: focuses on more than career skills and professional goals, it also emphasizes balancing those things with family and community responsibilities. FCCLA is a great CTSO for students in Education & Training, Hospitality & Tourism, and Human Services (Family & Community Services)

HOSA: is dedicated to preparing students for careers in the Health Science program. 

FFA: is dedicated to preparing students for careers in the Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources program.

SkillsUSA (only at Reese): is the most versatile of all the CTSOs. The organization provides leadership training, employability skills curriculum, skills assessments, and various events. SkillsUSA is only offered at Reese for students in Education & Training, Arts A/V, Architecture & Construction, Health Science, Hospitality & Tourism, Human Services (Cosmetology), and Law & Public Services

TSA: specifically focused on the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Transportation, Law & Public Services, Architecture & Construction, Arts A/V, Hospitality Tourism, and Manufacturing

JROTC: is a federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces for high school students to instill in secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. Fort Bend ISD offers Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine branches across the district. Students may select JROTC to take place as a P.E credit.
