Volunteer Opportunities

Global Studies Volunteer Guidelines

• Students are required to complete 25 hours of community service per year until they reach 100 total community service hours.
• Service hours must come from registered non-profit (501.c3) entities.
• You can only complete 25 hours in the summer for credit toward your 100 hours.
• You must provide a completed log signed by the appropriate representative of the organization you volunteer with.
• You can claim 8 hours within a 24-hour period for volunteering.

Allowed:
1. Volunteering at hospitals: must provide documentation from the hospital’s volunteer program.
2. Volunteering at Nursing Homes: must provide documentation from the homes volunteer program.
3. Volunteering for doctors that are providing a free service to the community.
4.  Volunteering at an event for a non-profit entity that DOES NOT receive money for the event. Example: a fundraising event that donates all money to a charity or the community.
5.  Religious Activities Allowed: Volunteering during Sunday School, Dharma/Dhamma, etc. 
Volunteering in the community with your church, synagogue, mosque, or temple. Teaching/decorating for vacation religious school. Religious Hours can only count for 6 of your 12.5 semester hours. , 
Mission Trips (25 hours max: 1 day = 8 hours),
6.  Helping teachers decorate their rooms before the school year begins or cleaning up their room at the end of the year. You can also help teachers with organizing throughout the year.
7.  Babysitting: (must first be approved by the academy coordinator) for families with special needs children, teachers that need help during the beginning of the year or open house. You CANNOT receive payment for babysitting in these cases.
8.  Peer tutoring through National Honor Societies. Must be done on campus during the designated tutorial hours for that society. (these hours cannot count for hours toward that or other National Honor Societies
9. Volunteer performance at a community event.
10. Volunteering for an event that is NOT part of a club, organization, or team that you are 
involved with.
11. Volunteering at Charity Walks/Events for Non-Profit entities.
12. Volunteering at animal shelters: must provide documentation from the shelter’s volunteer program.

Not Allowed:
1. Receiving money for volunteering
2. Working an event for a non-profit entity that receives money for the event.
3.  Religious Activities NOT-Allowed: Worship Activities during religious services. For example: singing in the choir, being a part of the worship team, playing in the band for a service.
4. Travel time to an event
5. Service hours signed by a parent or another student.
6. Babysitting for family members.
7.  Double dipping Y.E.S or other organization volunteer requirements with the academy required hours.
8. Grading papers for teachers.
9. Practice hours leading up to a voluntary performance at a community event.
10. Volunteering for political campaigns.
